How I Clean My Makeup Brushes

So, my most used makeup brushes have been long overdue on a clean.... and seeing as my skin has being getting fairly bad recently, I thought it was time to get rid of all the bacteria lurking on the bristles!

I thought I'd document how I clean my makeup brushes as I've read a lot of different methods, some of which just seem to completely overcomplicate it. Swooshing in extra virgin olive oil first? Using a spray bottle and only spritzing gently? Far too complicated for me - I'm a girl of simple measures! So for those who don't have much time, or who just can't be bothered, heres how I do it.

An Easy Way to Clean your Makeup Brushes

Firstly, you will need barely any supplies for this: some brushes, a towel and some shampoo will do! Its best to use as soft a shampoo as you can find - baby shampoo etc. As this was a last minute decision, all I had at home was some head & shoulders and it did the trick!

The method is then simple: put a little bit of shampoo on your palm, wet the brush, and swoosh the brush round in your hand. You'll see the dirt come out on your hand, and just keep repeating the process until the suds are clean.

When you're confident you've got all the dirt out, make sure the brush is rinsed under the water and there is no soapy residue on the brush.

All that's next is to let your brushes dry over night! The larger the brush, the longer it takes for it to dry (obviously), so its best to leave them as long as possible just to be sure!

Make sure you don't stand your brushes up in a pot like normal - you don't want the water to run down into the brush handle (no one wants a mouldy handle!).

I just lay the brushes out on a paper towel - simple! With larger brushes, I gently pat the sides into the correct shape, just to make sure they dry back in the shape they should!

And thats it! When they're dry, pop them back wherever you normally store them and you're good to go!

I'm definitely going to try and keep up this brush cleaning routine more regularly for the brushes I use daily above - seeing all the dirt that came out of them was gross!
